Processors (CPU)

Microsoft makes no secret of the fact that Windows XP is not targeted for older computers. At the very minimum, the OS requires a CPU of 233 MHz, and Microsoft recommends a 300-MHz processor. Microsoft also says that PCs with less than a 700-MHz CPU may perform better with Windows 2000 than with Windows XP.

Fix-It Tips

Depending on your motherboard, you may be able to upgrade your CPU and use Windows XP on your computer. Check the documentation for your system. To learn more about how to upgrade your processor, see PC World's article, "Upgrade Guide: Soup Up Your PC's Processor."
