Memory

We strongly recommend at least 256MB of RAM to run Windows XP; more memory is better. While Microsoft's bare minimum requirement is 64MB, you will find that doing anything more strenuous than using Notepad is going to make your PC unusable with only 64MB.

If you like multimedia applications or want to use Windows XP's multiple log-in or remote access features, 256MB is the true minimum and more is a good idea. You'll also want the extra system memory if your video subsystem depends on shared system memory. (See the Video Requirements section.)

Fix-It Tips

It may be possible to upgrade the RAM on your system. To find out more about how to upgrade your RAM, see PC World's article, "Upgrade Guide: Install RAM modules step by step."
